A Co Cavan woman hopes that by sharing her cancer journey she will help others who are going through a similar situation. Bawnboy native Tara Doonan is this year's Daffodil Day ambassador. The school teacher is leading the campaign to say "thank you" to those she credits with helping her through the most difficult experience of her life.
Diagnosed with breast cancer aged just 36, Tara leaned heavily on Irish Cancer Society supports such as the Support Line and remote counselling - all of which are only made possible because of days like Daffodil Day according to Tara. The West Cavan woman says, "I was carried along by an army of people I’ve never even met” and says she “doesn’t know where she would be today without that crucial support."
Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Tara says cancer doesn't discriminate and that's one of the biggest reasons why she wants to speak out about her story; "Every three minutes in Ireland somebody is told those awful words - you have cancer - whether it be a child or adult, it really doesn't discriminate and is no longer a disease of the elderly, not to be scaremongering but it really could be anybody at anytime, that's why it's so important that we are aware of our bodies an our health hand we look after ourselves and get anything checked that we think is unusual."
