Co Meath distillery takes recycling to a whole new level

'We are laying down a little bit of history here'

An Irish Distillery is taking recycling to a new level, using one-hundred-year-old Spanish wine barrels to mature Irish whiskey.

The casks from Andalucia in Southern Spain, were shipped to Boann Distillery in Co Meath.

The Distillery's Peter Cooney says the earliest that whiskey can be matured for is three years.

However, he advised that the Distillery will probably leave it for much longer.

"Three years technically is when single pot still is officially called Irish whiskey," added Mr Cooney

"We are laying down a bit of history.

"And, hopefully that can be enjoyed by future generations to come."
