The Cathoirleach for Ballybay-Clones has called for an urgent review of the school transport system across the Municipal District.
Cllr Sinead Flynn made the calls due to ongoing safety concerns and communication failures.
Cllr Flynn says that year after year, parents are contacting her with the same problems, children left without a place on the local school bus, and others being dropped off or collected along busy roads with no proper pull-in areas or safety measures in place.
As part of her motion, Cllr Flynn is calling for a comprehensive safety review of all school bus collection and drop-off points to be carried out by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Roads Section of Monaghan County Council.
She has also called for better communication from Bus Éireann and the Department of Education, including a dedicated contact line for elected representatives with clear response timelines, and for urgent action to tackle the driver shortage by implementing the Programme for Government commitment to review and remove the current age cap of 70 for school transport drivers.
Cllr Flynn told Northern Sound: "Some children can’t even get a place on the local school bus, and others are being dropped off on dangerous roads. This is about our children’s education, their future, and their safety and we need real solutions now, not more empty promises."
