An increasing demand on palliative care services in Cavan and Monaghan is putting pressure on resources. Now, today on Daffodil Day, Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith has asked the Minister for Health and the HSE for additional finances for staff to deliver more palliative care and other cancer services in this region.
The TD raised the issue of palliative care in the Dáil. He said the HSE has confirmed to him they are in the process of recruiting for a second consultant in palliative medicine.
The deputy also said "substantial progress" has been made on the new 16-bed palliative service at St. Christopher's Hospice, with construction due to begin in the second quarter of this year But Brendan Smith stressed the need for more government money (listen below):
