A Co Cavan Councillor has raised the issue of dereliction in local towns and villages across the region.
Cllr Stiofan Conaty says it is an absolute shame and a scandal that so many buildings are going unused in the midst of a housing crisis.
The Sinn Fein Councillor said it is just not right to have hundreds of potential homes lying empty in towns and villages across the county when ordinary working people cannot get a roof over their heads. Cllr Conaty said dereliction is a scourge on the social fabric of our localities, adding that there are hundreds of properties in urban areas recorded as derelict by Cavan County Council.
The local representative says derelict buildings become eyesores and in many cases, have almost been accepted as an inevitable part of the built environment. Cllr Conaty says there are limited resources available to Cavan County Council to tackle dereliction but that he wasn't doubting the absolute commitment of the local authority.
