The Department of Transport has announced €360 million nationally in funding for Active Travel and Greenways in 2026.
This includes funding of €3.25 million for Co. Cavan, and €6.8 million for Co. Monaghan.
The investment is dedicated to the development of walking and cycling projects that offer safe, sustainable and healthy transport options to communities around the country.
The Active and Sustainable Transport Investment Programme in the National Transport Authority (NTA) was allocated €290 million for the development of walking and cycling infrastructure in villages, towns and cities.
This funding will enable almost 1,000 projects of varying scale to progress in 2026.
€62 million has been allocated to deliver Greenway projects across Ireland, including the extension of the Ulster Canal Greenway in Monaghan.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Minister of State Niamh Smyth welcomed the news.
She said: “There is incredible work done by our local authorities to re-open more rural parts of the constituency.
“Monaghan has done particularly well, with €4.3 million of the overall funds being allocated to the greenways across the county.
“In Cavan we see significant funds being allocated for road safety projects, and things that will bring some comfort and ease to parents and grandparents listening in, who dropped kids to school this morning,” Minister of State Smyth added.
Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith also welcomed the allocation.
Deputy Smith told Northern Sound: "Safety and footpath improvements will be carried out in towns and villages including Cavan Town, Kingscourt, Cootehill, Swanlinbar and Bawnboy and a number of these projects will improve access to local schools.
"As well as improving road infrastructure cycling and walking routes are also valuable amenities for local residents and visitors to the area.
"I was glad to work along with local Fianna Fáil Councillors and residents in advocating for projects to be advanced under these schemes."
