The family of Shane O'Farrell have welcomed the DPP's decision to appeal the sentence handed down to Joe Drennan's killer.
Last month, Kieran Fogarty was convicted of dangerous driving causing the death of the student journalist in Limerick City in 2023 - but the judge ordered his sentence run concurrently with another, meaning he would not face any extra jail time for the offence.
A campaign had been set up and a number of protests held, urging the DPP to intervene. The Drennan family say they will continue to campaign for sentencing laws for serious crimes to be changed, regardless of the outcome of the appeal.
The mother of Shane O'Farrell who was killed in a hit and run in August in 2011 in Co Monaghan says they welcome the appeal to allow for scrutiny. Lucia O'Farrell says if the law was applied correctly then , the sentences would have run consecutively, not concurrently. She added that the Drennan family were let down.
