The national Easter bank holiday weekend garda operation led to a number of detections and arrests in Cavan. Over the weekend across the country, gardaí carried out over 4,500 breath tests leading to 149 arrests for drink driving. Two of those were in Cavan last night where one driver was charged to court for excess alcohol and another has been released pending the results of a blood analysis.
Gardaí seized 438 vehicles for having no tax and insurance across the country this weekend. Two of that figure were drivers in Bailiebborough when ANPR technology picked up two alerts for cars using the public road without valid insurance.
The extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place between 7am last Thursday, 17th April until 7am this morning. In that time, there has been three fatalities on our roads and 11 serious collisions took place that resulted in 12 people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.
Over 2800 drivers were detected for speeding offences throughout the weekend with one driver clocked at 179km/h in a 60km/h zone on R194 Granard, Co. Longford. 225 motorists were detected using their mobile phone behind the wheel and 73 driving without seatbelts.
Another motorist arrested in Cavan over the weekend was found to be driving whilst disqualified. They have now been charged to court bringing the total number of detections in Cavan to five, including two vehicle seizures, and two to three court appearances.
