A number of schools across the Northern Sound region have been sanctioned for special education classes.
Breifne College in Cavan Town, St. Michael’s National School in Cootehill, Killinkere National School, Scoil Éanna in Ballybay, and Corracrin National School in Monaghan, will all benefit from the news.
The classes were announced by the Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth, Michael Moynihan this morning.
Speaking to Northern Sound, local Minister of State Niamh Smyth welcomed the news.
She acknowledged that main stream schools are under pressure to provide specialised care for children with additional needs.
The Fianna Fáil TD said that the sanctioning of special education schools is welcome news to schools, parents, and students.
Minister of State Smyth said: "There is such pressure on schools now. To have the special education class sanctioned is a real help to the school in terms of the resources they can access.
"Of course, its welcome news to the parents themselves. Special education classes provide support from an academic perspective, and from a pastoral perspective for children.
"It doesn't mean that they have to be in special ed classes all the time, some will do it as a support to their main stream class. A lot of parents like the idea of a child being involved in the school community, particularly if they have a sibling in the school as well," she added.
