Former Cavan councillor further remanded on bail over theft charges

Mr McKiernan appeared before Judge John Martin earlier today.

A former Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council has been further remanded on bail, charged with the theft of just over €172,000 from a Co Meath charity.

43 year old Seán McKiernan, with an address at Trinity Bungalow, Virginia Road, Bailieborough, Cavan has been charged with 58 counts of theft at various unknown locations within the State.

The charges relate to the thefts from the Navan Mental Health Housing Association in amounts ranging from €500 to €7,500 in 2019.

Mr McKiernan appeared before Judge John Martin earlier today at Trim Circuit Court.

David Perry BL who is representing the accused asked the court for an arraignment in the case.

Free legal aid was granted previously in the form of a solicitor and two barristers to the former Cavan County Councillor.

Judge John Martin remanded Mr McKiernan on continuing bail to appear at Trim Circuit Court on July 3rd next.
