A former Cavan Garda and road safety advocate says he wants NCT testers to be given the statutory powers to seize and detain defective and dangerous vehicles at centres after they fail their tests. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier, John Wilson said it is wrong that vehicles that fail the NCT test because they are deemed to be defective or dangerous are then allowed to be driven away on public roads. Mr Wilson, who may be best known for blowing the whistle on the irregularities in the penalty point system, called for this gap in the law to be filled.
He said while guards have the power to seize vehicles which don't display a valid NCT test disc, testers do not have powers to stop failed cars going back on our roads. He stressed he is not talking about cars which may be failed for a minor fault but the" worst of the worst".
