The late Dr Rory O'Hanlon has been described by those who knew him as a "caring practitioner" and "one of the most experienced public representatives across any party" in Ireland.
The former Cavan-Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD died yesterday.
Paying tribute on today's Joe Finnegan Show, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said that 49 years ago the duo entered the Dail together.
He said Dr O'Hanlon was someone who party members looked up to, as he encouraged and helped members believe in themselves.
The former Taoiseach recalled that the pair were involved in a lot of Northern Ireland committees in the 80s and he took a keen interest in the North and South Armagh.
He described Dr O'Hanlon as a wonderful person who was always a great person to give you advice, particularly when it came to the North as he had many connections and friends throughout it.
Former ministerial colleague and long-time friend Ray McSharry also paid tribute on today's Joe Finnegan Show.
He said Mr O'Hanlon was a very kind and caring practitioner and he carried that through his political career for over 30 years: "He was one of the most experienced public representatives of any party and he will be sadly missed. Though he retired some time ago he was always there as a guiding hand for those who were coming up the line."
