Former US President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100.
He served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. James Earl Carter Jr, was born in October 1924 in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia.
His father was a farmer and a businessman, and his mother was a nurse. He had ancestors from Co Antrim and had visitied Ireland a number of times.
He had an outstanding post-presidency career and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, for his lifetime's work of conflict resolution and human rights. His time in office as US President from 1977 to 1981, was marked by domestic and international crises including inflation, energy, the US hostage crisis and war in Afghanistan. Speaking during an interview with late Time magazine journalist, Hugh Sidey in 1996, President Carter recalls dealing with the 52 American diplomats and citizens being held hostage in Iran for 14 months, was the most stressful time during his presidency:
