Gardai remain at scene of suspicious device discovery in Monaghan

An area in Monaghan Town remains closed off this evening following the discovery of a suspicious device earlier today.

Gardaí received reports of a suspicious device at a location on Plantation Road in the town centre shortly after 10am this morning.

A cordon has been established and the services of the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit have been requested to deal with ongoing situation.

Nearby buildings along with a building site were evacuated in the aftermath of the discovery.

Gardai remain at the scene, Northern Sound News understands that the device is old grenade.

It was found alongside an old wall that runs along the old Garda barracks in the town by a a staff member of a construction site that's located next to the former barracks.
