Local TD, Matt Carthy has accused the government of showing total disregard for Irish sovereignty during a number of motions related to migration debated in the Dáil yesterday.
Deputy Carthy said that Sinn Féin will oppose government moves to opt in to regulations before the Dáil was in a position to assess whether the final contents of the regulations were in Ireland’s best interests. He said the majority of the problems facing Ireland’s International Protection System do not require EU legislation or regulations – they require a government that ensures that international protection applications are processed quickly. The Cavan Monaghan TD also said there was problems around those who are not entitled to remain leave swiftly and that those who are entitled to remain are supported to integrate into communities.
He said Sinn Féin has been very clear that where a person is not entitled to be in Ireland, they should be returned safely and that deportation orders should be both enforced and tracked.
