The teenager who died in a tractor crash close to Carrigallen will be laid to rest on Easter Sunday.
Dessie O'Kelly died when the tractor he was a passenger in collided at Aghavilla, Carrigallen which is located close to the mart yesterday afternoon at around 3pm
The 18-year-old will repose at his home in Drumloona, Carrigallen, on Good Friday from 4pm to 8pm and on Saturday from 5pm to 8pm.
His funeral Mass will take place in St Mary's Church, Drumeela, on Easter Sunday at 2pm, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
Dessie was a first year student at Teagasc Agricultural College in Ballyhaise where he was studying for a Certificate in Agriculture.
The local college's principal, John Kelly told RTE News that teachers and students are in shock.
He said that, “our thoughts and prayers are with Dessie's family, friends, and fellow students at this very sad time.”
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council Paddy O'Rourke said the community has been "numbed and shocked” by this news.
He said, “the death of this young man has cast a gloom over the entire parish and surrounding district.”
Cllr O’Rourke said, “the family would be very well known across South Leitrim here and West Cavan and our sympathy goes out to them, it's impossible to find words that could comfort people in this circumstances, because nothing is ever going to replace their son and brother and but our sympathy goes to them nevertheless”.
He added that, “our thoughts and prayers are also with the other young man who was injured and who, I gather, will recover, and that's very much to be welcomed. But I mean this, this loss of this young man in the on the threshold of the prime of his life, it's nothing short of a complete tragedy.”
In a social media post, Carrigallen Vocational School where Dessie was a former student said, “It is with deep sadness that we remember former student Dessie O’Kelly who passed away yesterday. The sympathies of all our school community are extended to his family and friends at this sad time. School will be open from 11 to lunchtime tomorrow to offer support to current and last year’s LC students.”
