Presidential candidate Heather Humphreys has hit out at the dangers of social media.
The former Cavan/Monaghan TD says more needs to be done to protect people online.
Ms Humphreys believes the role of the President can have a huge role in highlighting these issues especially when it comes to protecting younger people. Her comments come as Tánaiste Simon Harris has refused to speculate on his future in politics, after multiple threats were made against his family over the past week.
After saying his future would be guided by discussions with his family, the Tánaiste then twice refused to say whether stepping away from politics was being considered. Speaking on the Wider View today on Northern Sound today, Heather Humphreys said these threats are so wrong on so many levels and it needs to stop.
"What has been happening to Simon Harris and his family is wrong. It shouldn't be happening. They were out of their home last night because of threats, and it really has to stop and just generally I am worried about social media, but I'm particularly worried about young people and the damage that social media is doing to them"
Simon Harris said threats against politicians need to be taken more seriously and that it took a lot for him to show up at the Fine Gael pre-Dáil think-in this afternoon. Ahead of a meeting with party colleagues, Simon Harris said his most fundamental duty is to ensure the wellbeing of his family.
