Heather Humphreys has so many supporters from within the parliamentary party of Fine Gael that Sean Kelly cannot secure the 20 signatures needed to force a contest.
That’s according to Virgin Media News this evening who say with 57 nominations available, Ms Humphreys has 38; Kelly cannot reach the requisite 20 that is now required.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show on Northern Sound today, Ms Humphreys said she has "decided to go for it", having originally ruled herself out of the race three months ago.
It follows the shock announcement by Mairead McGuinness last week that she would now not run for Fine Gael due to health reasons. The former Cavan-Monaghan TD now looks certain to be on the ballot paper for the upcoming President Election.
