Monaghan's Rossmore Park featured in the ITV programme 'Mahon's Way' this week, with local historian Enda Galligan outlining the history of the park.
The programme was broadcast on ITV last Sunday, and examined Monaghan Town's architectural heritage.
Mr. Galligan explained that the history of Rossmore Forest Park can be traced back as far as the 1400s.
He believes that Monaghan town is lucky to have the facility right on it's doorstep.
The local historian said: "Rossmore as we know it has quite a long, interesting history. I can certainly go back to the 1500s or 1400s, when the site would have been owned by the McMahon family.
"The McMahon family were the chieftans of Oriel. Oriel was a kingdom, very much aligned to what we know as the Diocese of Clogher. After the Nine Years War, which was fought between the Irish Chieftains and the English army. The English were the victors, and they took the land off the Irish chieftains.
"Those lands were gifted to a Welsh man known as Edward Blayney, and Edward had been an officer in the English army during the Nine Years War. He was gifted extensive tracts of land around what we now know as Monaghan town, and what we now know as Castleblayney.
"Edward Blayney was the first of a line of people to build a castle in Rossmore. Over the next few hundred years, it passed through a number of families," Galligan added.
