Cavan General Hospital is currently managing an outbreak of norovirus within the Hospital.
In order to help protect patients, staff and visitors, temporary visiting restrictions are now in place across the Hospital.
A statement from the HSE read: "Visiting arrangements will be at the discretion of the Clinical Nurse Manager on each ward, based on the clinical situation and the need to minimise the spread of infection. Members of the public are asked to cooperate fully with staff and to avoid visiting the Hospital unless absolutely necessary.
"The Emergency Department in Cavan General Hospital is also currently experiencing a high number of presentations and admissions. We are asking our local communities across Cavan and Monaghan to please consider all healthcare options if you or your family become unwell. Depending on your illness, there are a number of treatment options open to you including GPs, out-of-hours GP services, pharmacies and the Monaghan Injury Unit, which is open Monday to Sunday 8am to 8pm (final registration 7pm).
"As always, people who do require emergency care are encouraged to attend the Emergency Department where they will be prioritised. Patients who attend the Emergency Department for routine and non-urgent treatment may experience long waiting times as we treat our sickest patients first.
"We appreciate your cooperation in relation to these measures and thank you for your ongoing support."
