Cavan County Council has confirmed that safety concerns is the reason behind the removal of an iconic tree in Cavan Town.
Following a survey of two horse chestnut trees to the front of Johnston Central Library on Farnham Street by a registered arborist, it was discovered that one of the trees was in poor physiological and structural condition and posed a significant risk to public safety.
On the basis of this professional advice, and in the interests of protecting the public, Cavan County Council engaged a contractor to safely remove the tree on Saturday morning.
Cavan County Council said it recognises that this tree occupied a special place in the hearts of Cavan people, and that its removal may cause upset.
However, the safety of the people of Cavan is paramount to the local authority and it was imperative that the tree was safely removed before a serious accident could occur.
Cavan County Council said it will endeavour to put in place a suitable replacement at the earliest possible opportunity.
