A Newbliss farmer says the IFA will be "keeping an eye" on the Bluetongue virus which was identified in a blood sample of an animal from a farm in Co Monaghan.
It was reported last week that the animal was slaughtered in November 2025.
The Department of Agriculture has undertaken the testing of cattle blood samples, in an aim to grasp which geographic areas the virus may be present.
Blood samples tested originate as far back as September 2025.
Speaking to Northern Sound, IFA's Animal Health Chair David Hall said it's not unexpected that it came to Co Monaghan as it's not far from the coast.
"It looks like it came across the Irish Sea in the same plume of midgets that came across and infected the cases in Louth and Down before Christmas," David explained.
