Eamon Ryan, the Minister for the Environment, met with his counterpart in the North yesterday, to discuss among other things the north-south interconnector. Deputy Ryan and Conor Murphy MLA met to cement their cross-border comittment to "driving forward their net zero agenda". In a statement, Conor Murphy said their discussion focused on the interconnector.
If it goes ahead, Eirgrid's proposed 40 Kilo volt overhead electricity power line would connect the grids of Ireland and Northern Ireland. According to the statement, the Ministers from both sides of the border, are in agreement that it would improve electricity security of supply, facilitate investment and deliver increased prosperity for all.
For almost 20 years, landowners and farmers in Cavan, Monaghan and Meath, have opposed the overhead cable on health and safety grounds calling for the north-south interconnector to be run underground instead.
