A Co Cavan organic farmer has created an incredible piece called 'An Ruaille Buaille Druma' which has gained the title of Ireland's largest drum. The one-of-a-kind, handcrafted drum was created by Gearoid Teevan of Drummany Spirit, alongside master carpenter Micheal O'Rahill and painted by artist Claire Falconer. The Drummy Spirit community group is honouring the ancient Celtic festival of Bealtaine, or the May Festival, which marks the beginning of summer.
The massive creation is 'drumming up' lots of interest nationally and will be launched at a Bealtaine celebration this Sunday afternoon at 2pm at his lakeside farm. The drum is 13 foot wide and over 40 foot round allowing up to 30 people to get into the rhythm, playing together. Speaking to Northern Sound, Gearoid said he is looking forward to seeing everyone around it and being guided into playing it. He says this drum is the story of tradition and heritage.
Crafted by master carpenter Micheal O Raghaill the wooden drum is set to become an attraction at Gearoid's Healing Spirit Festival and also will be capable of travelling around Ireland. Gearoid told Northern Sound; "I've had a special trailer made to accommodate it and it will be able to travel the length and breadth of the country. Drumming is a great way to connect people and this community drum will achieve that." Tickets and further information can be found here.
