Less rental properties locally due to new bill says local auctioneer

Eviction notices increased by 41 per cent at the end of last year.

Cavan has been named as one of the counties with the highest average rent rises.

Eviction notices increased by 41 per cent at the end of last year, compared to the same period in 2024.

Residential Tenancies Board figures show over 5-thousand-200 notices of termination were issued in the final three months of 2025, with most due to the landlord's plans to sell the property.

A local auctioneer says unfortunately in the short term the new rental bill is bad news for renters. Donal Keenan from Keenan Auctioneers in Kingscourt says the new legislation could be the case of the cure might be worse than the disease.

He said on one hand you have some landlords existing the market due to high taxes being paid and further bureaucracy being endured. Then with the other hand you have prices going up and less properties to rent.

Donal says as a direct result of the bill being introduced you have less rentals on the market.
