A local Aontu representative believes that there is a need for some homework for primary school aged children.
Olivia Larkin noted that there is a balance that should be reached but some homework is important.
There is an argument among some that long hours of homework and reduce time for outdoor play and family life.
However, Ms Larkin, who is a secondary school teacher said a complete ban of homework makes the transition to secondary school more difficult.
She said while two hours of homework for primary school aged children is ridiculous, she thinks 30 minutes of homework helps children reinforce what they learned.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Ms Larkin said the children need homework.
"Well, I'm going to be not popular here, but I have to say I disagree. Obviously, there's balance here. Two hours of homework for primary school children is ridiculous. But there is a need for some homework, maybe 30 minutes, because I'm a secondary school teacher. So we've seen the situation where schools don't give homework, but the transition to secondary school would be very difficult to suddenly go from no homework to a lot of homework. The children need to have some homework. I'm a foster parent myself, so I have a lot of experience of children at different levels in primary school and they need to come home and they need to consolidate the work that's been done in the classroom."
