A Co Cavan woman says Budget 2026 is a "critical opportunity" for the Government to show its commitment to young people.
The National Youth Council of Ireland says the youth-work sector needs a €21 million boost in October.
Kathryn Walsh is Director of Policy and Advocacy at the National Youth Council of Ireland.
The Ballyjamesduff native believes young people deserve access to high-quality, safe, and inclusive spaces where they are supported to thrive.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Kathryn highlighted the importance of showing young people that they belong; "You can’t build communities with bricks alone. Young people need places where they feel connected, valued and supported. Youth work offers young people these essential spaces and opportunities to build relationships, explore their identity, develop skills, and increase their confidence. These are the building blocks of stronger communities, and of a more inclusive society.
"The NYCI’s pre-budget 2026 submission outlines a package of targeted investment measures aimed at “ensuring that youth services can meet growing demand, address inequalities in provision, and respond to the complex needs of young people in a rapidly changing society”.
"We know from research and from decades of experience that youth work makes a lasting difference in young people’s lives. But this work requires investment. It requires sustained political will. Budget 2026 must deliver on both."
