A local councillor has said that a mixture of private and social development is needed to end Ireland's housing crisis.
Sinn Féin councillor Niamh McCooey has said that the government are not meeting the targets that it sets for itself.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Cllr. McCooey explained that vulture funds and private developers continue to build homes that are unattainable for the average worker.
She said that more and more people are being driven to emigration or into homelessness.
Cllr. McCooey said that the Taoiseach is ignoring statistics about new tenancies.
He said: "Michael Martin and the government can argue whatever they want about the six year tenancy rules.
"What they are ignoring, and what they are choosing to ignore is that 25% of tenancies in any given year are new tenancies. They will automatically, as of the 1st of March, be subject to these rent hikes.
"He's also choosing to ignore the fact that renters only stay in one property an average of three and a half years, so renters are being completely led up the garden path," Cllr. McCooey added.
