A Cavan County Councillor has highlighted concerns over asthma care in Ireland.
Stiofán Conaty called for the council to write to relevant ministers to support funding for asthma services in budget 2026.
He is concerned that the illness is wrongly treated as an acute condition, despite Ireland having one of the highest asthma rates in the world and a 42% rise in related deaths in just five years.
Cllr. Conaty warned that many patients cannot afford vital inhalers or access new treatments due to high costs and delays in approval.
He outlined five measures proposed by the Asthma Society of Ireland, including subsidising combination inhalers, funding the warmer homes scheme, and establishing a severe asthma registry.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr. Conaty urged ministers to act on them ahead of Budget 2026.
