A local councillor has called for a Cathaoirleach reception to be held for Cavan doctor Dr Morgan McMonagle.
Originally from Cavan, Dr Morgan McMonagle is a vascular surgeon at University Hospital Waterford and the 2025 recipient of the RCSI Humanitarian and Community Award for his commitment and service to protecting the lives of others and the welfare of humanity.
While a consultant of trauma surgery at St Mary’s Hospital, London, and through lecturing in Imperial College London, Dr. McMonagle met Professor David Nott, a general and vascular surgeon who had experience volunteering in disaster and conflict zones.
The David Nott Foundation trains doctors in countries impacted by conflict and catastrophes.
His first mission with the Foundation was in the West Bank in Palestine, he has since been to Ukraine on two occasions, once to Lebanon and more recently on two missions to Gaza.
At yesterday's local authority meeting, Cavan councillor Niamh Brady called for a special event to honour the Cavan native.
Cllr Brady told Northern Sound: "We are all aware of Mr. McMonagle's Humanitarian work in Gaza in 2025 which he visited on three occasions to serve the war-torn people. Previously he volunteered his Surgical skills in Ramallah and Lebanon. He also made two visits to Ukraine to upskill Doctors and Surgeons there, having to be held in underground bomb shelters with minimum light or facilities. He continues this upskilling work in various locations outside of Ukraine.
"Mr McMonagle has been recognised for his Humanitarian work abroad. He received an Alumni Award 2025 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland for this Humanitarian work. He has been similarly recognised by colleges in the UK and USA.
"For his Humanitarian work, I believe that he fully merits a Cathoirleach's reception from his native Local Authority here in Cavan."
