Cavan Councillor John Paul Feeley has said that discussions around reducing the national road speed limits is "ill-advised".
Councillor Feeley said he was "very conscious" of the 152 people killed on our roads this year which, is 35 more than last year.
However, he said he thought other measures like mandatory drug-testing, not just in terms of alcohol, and especially at the scene of an accident, is important.
The Fianna Fáil politician also criticised what he termed "lazy policing" for suggesting that the government "could suddenly find a pile of money for extra speed vans".
"Anyone who's driving the roads can see that people have got very aggressive in their driving," Councillor Feeley told the Joe Finnegan Show.
"We need to deal with more of the other driving offences like dangerous driving and driving with mobile phones.
"These are all important to address, not just the speeding issue," he said.
