A local councillor has called on Cavan County Council to consider the possibility of erecting safety signage at lakes.
The issue of concerns around water safety was raised at a previous meeting of Cavan County Council by Fine Gael Councillor, TP O'Reilly.
Speaking to Northern Sound, TP O'Reilly said that while he is aware temporary signage is sometimes put up in certain areas during peak times, a more permanent solution is needed.
Currently there are no designated swimming areas in Cavan, so signage would make people aware of the dangers associated with certain lakes.
Cllr. O'Reilly said he's not trying to discourage people from swimming altogether, he just wants them to be aware.
"We're so lucky I suppose that we have the facilities and we have the lakes and all that, but there is that bit of danger that goes with them. I suppose, it's just to try and make people aware because when the good weather comes, people, maybe they wouldn't even be qualified swimmers, or everyone kind of takes the water at that stage, and they don't just realise the dangers that's there. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from going swimming, but I just don't want to see people getting into problems and generally this time of the year when the weather is good, we always have fatalities and we always have a tragedy and we're just trying to prevent that."
