A Co Cavan Councillor is calling on all local Oireachtas members to highlight the lack of funding for SOSAD.
Cllr Brendan Fay said that in November, Minister Mary Butler gave assurances that money would be found for the local service. He said the suicide awareness and prevention organisation have been let down by the minister and is calling on the representatives in the area to highlight the lack of sustainable funding.
The news emerged yesterday evening that the SOSAD messaging service will cease tomorrow due to a lack of funding. SOSAD, which stands for Save Our Sons and Daughters, also provides a range of mental health and bereavement support services.
In a statement issued by SOSAD, they say the messaging service has been crucial to so many, and its loss is truly heart-breaking. SOSAD's 24/7 Freephone helpline will remain open and the organisation will also continue to offer free counselling services.
Cllr Brendan Fay who is also a volunteer for SOSAD Cavan, had this message for Minister for Mental Health, Mary Butler and the government.
