A local councillor believes the pub plays a larger part in rural communities than just an outlet for alcohol.
Brendan Fay was reacting to figures released this week indicating over two thousand bars have closed their doors in the last 20 years due to rising costs.
Pub owners around the country have been calling for more Government support to keep the tradition of Irish pubs alive.
It is estimated that one pub is closing every three-and-a-half days, with those in rural areas being impacted the most.
Speaking to Northern Sound, local councillor Brendan Fay said the pub is about a sense of community.
