In response to the price cuts, Mr. McElearney called for consumers to purchase farmers own brands.

He said: "Farmers are the consumer as well. We hit all the other cost of living crises, we experience all them things as well.

"If consumers want fresh milk on their table 365 days a year, they should prioritise having farmer own brands on their table, such as our own Champion here in Cavan-Monaghan.

"Believe it or not, only 40% of the retail price the consumer pays for a drum of milk comes back to the farmer, " he added.
