The Department of Agriculture, has announced that vaccination against bluetongue will be included as an option for farmers participating in schemes this year.
Vaccination can reduce the impact and severity of bluetongue virus on livestock and thus mitigate both animal health and welfare issues and the production losses which an infection may cause.
The IFA's Animal Health Chair, David Hall has welcomed the news.
The Newbliss man believes that access to vaccinations is good news for farmers.
Spring is the optimum time for vaccinating for Bluetongue, which should take place before the higher risk period during the warmer summer months.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Mr. Hall explained that it is a busy time of the year for farmers, and that it is important they keep on top of things.
Mr. Hall said: "Its early days yet, we haven't saw the details of it yet, but it looks like it will be another option.
"Its a busy time of year, but after some of the information we've heard about the potential risks from Bluetongue next season, with infertility, and abortions, its really something you should consider, and have a talk with your vet," Mr. Hall added.
