Local farmer worried about bird flu in area

"When you go in the morning and you open the door to the shed, you don't know what you're going to find."

The news editor of the Irish Farmers' Journal, Amy Forde has said the latest case of bird flu is worrying because of its location.

Last night, the Department of Agriculture confirmed a third case of bird flu, in a commercial turkey flock in Clontibret.

A 3km protection zone has been placed around the latest bird flu outbreak, while a national housing order remains in effect for the country.

Ms. Forde highlighted that a lot of Ireland's poultry farmers are located in the Cavan - Monaghan region.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, she said that the birds in the flock will culled.

"Highly pathogenic bird flu is so contagious, and it has such a devastating effect on a flock. Everything will be culled, the exact same happened in Co. Meath and Co. Carlow," Forde said.

"Yesterday the housing order was put in place by the department, so all birds have to be housed. I reckon a lot of farmers will have taken action last week, following the cases in Meath and Carlow, and will have housed prior," she added.

Meanwhile, a local poultry farmer has said he is worried that the disease is in "the heartland" of poultry in Ireland.

Co. Cavan farmer Brendan Soden is the Irish Farmers' Association's poultry vice-chairman.

He told Northern Sound that there is a stakeholder meeting this afternoon, where the department will provide an update.

Mr. Soden said it the spread of the disease is upsetting for local poultry farmers.

He said: "Talking to a few farmers, its on your mind all the time. When you go in the morning and you open the door to the shed, you don't know what you're going to find.

"We thought maybe when it was in other parts of the country, but when it turns up on your doorstep this is a different situation. Everyone's doing their best to keep it off their farms at the minute.

"We have a stakeholders meeting this afternoon, we're glad to see [the Department of Agriculture] are doing that, keeping us updated on what's happening," Mr. Soden added.
