Local Labour representative calls for minimum wage increase

The local representative said the minimum wage should go up to €12.90 as opposed to the current figure of €10.30.

A Cavan Labour representative says there are a number of factors which are increasing the cost of living.

While inflation rates are at the highest in 22 years, Liam Van der Spek believes the only way to reduce the financial pressures facing households, is to offer workers a pay rise.

He claims Ireland in particular has one of the highest, low pay rates in the EU and is something that "should not" be accepted.

He added that Ireland is a "wealthy country" and believes it's important for people who work to get a share in that wealth.

The local representative said the minimum wage should go up to €12.90 as opposed to the current figure of €10.30, adding that "nobody" should struggle for essentials if they are working a full-time job.
