A local man is set to launch a book this evening a business that operated in Monaghan for 124 years.
Joe Leonard from Smithboro, son of the late TD Jimmy Leonard, will launch his book 'Heritage Destruction - The Death of a Co-op' tonight in the Four Seasons Hotel at 8.30 pm. Former employees, their families and everyone who is interested in the history of the beloved Town of Monaghan Co-op, is being invited to the event. The Co-op was a huge economic driver for the region since its foundation in 1901. This book launch will also signify the end of an era for so many people.
Joe himself worked in the co-op for 14 years, as did his father before him like so many others from the area that worked at the well known facility down through the years. The book summarises the history of the co-op and charts the story up until its closure, the highs and the lows.
Joe says he had a wonderful time working at the creamery over the 14 years that he was there.
