A commitment to education will be the legacy left behind by the Sisters of St Louis. After 166 years of presence and ministry in Monaghan, the Sisters of St Louis are closing their Motherhouse Convent. Margaret Conlon who is the Principal of St Louis Secondary School in Monaghan said on a "personal level" she as "very sad" to hear of the closure. According to Mrs Conlon, for more than 166 years the St Louis Sisters have contributed "greatly" to the the provision of education and community life in Monaghan.
To mark the convent's closure, several events are taking place this weekend. Speaking to Northern Sound, the local school principal believes this will be a "poignant weekend" when we remember, salute and thank the St Louis Sisters who have gave so much to the town, the community and the world. Mrs Conlon explained; "In 1859, Sisters Genevieve Beale, Claire O’Sullivan and Clemence McCarthy arrived from France to Monaghan with lots of books and little money as was quoted by Sister Claire and that's what they started off with. From then, the schools under the guidance of the St Louis Sisters have grown over the years we need to recognise that and continue their good work into the future."
