There has been reaction locally to the closure of the Northern Standard.
The paper published its last edition today after nearly 200 years in circulation.
The Northern Standard has been the longest established newspaper circulating in County Monaghan, the first issue was published back in January 10th, 1839.
Management at the local paper announced the closure last week citing challenging circumstances created by a radically altered and irreversible commercial environment which has seen The Northern Standard struggle to sustain its long-term viability.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Colm Carthy described it as a shock to everyone.
These people on the streets of Monaghan reacted to the closure today.
Micheal Brady, assistant manager in Flemings Supervalu in Monaghan town, said people will be looking for a type of paper that doesn't exist anymore.
