Local rent prices spiralling 'out of control'

Deputy Tully says she knows of many people who are trapped in rental situations.

A local TD has blamed the government for the spiralling price of rent and housing across Cavan and Monaghan. In a statement issued to Northern Sound, Cavan-Monaghan TD Pauline Tully complained about the government's inaction in helping workers and families to afford their rent. According to the Sinn-Féin TD, homeownership has collapsed and 40% of people in their 30s are still living in their family homes, with house prices rising by 6% in Cavan and 10% in Monaghan over the past year.

Deputy Tully noted that Sinn Féin is currently planning to deliver an affordable housing scheme, which will allow people to buy homes at or near the cost of construction. The TD concluded that the government needs to deliver genuinely affordable homes, at prices working people can afford.

Deputy Tully continued; "The housing crisis will only be fixed when the cost of houses and rents are brought down by increasing supply. We are losing our young, educated and skilled staff, especially in the healthcare and social professions - our teachers and nurses - because they cannot afford to live here due to housing. It is time for a Government that will deliver genuinely affordable homes, at prices working people can afford. It is time for a Sinn Féin Government."
