A local Senator is calling for people across the Northern Sound region to wear the Easter Lily, as a mark of respect for all those who "died for Irish Freedom".
Senator Sarah O'Reilly made the call as the 110th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising approaches.
According to Senator O'Reilly, the Easter Lily was introduced by Cumann Na Mban in 1926 to raise funds for families of those involved in the Irish Independence movement.
She believes that we owe a "profound debt of gratitude" to those who died in the movement, and that wearing the Easter Lily is a way to pay tribute to them.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, the Senator said that the Lily is for everybody.
She said that it is a gesture of recognition and respect.
Senator O'Reilly said: "Back in those days, it was a really dangerous time. A time when brave men and women came forward and stood up. They should be recognised for that, its a part of our history.
"Last Wednesday, Francis Black held a meeting in Leinster House, it was a talk called 'The Protestant Perspective'. I listened to protestants from Ulster Unionist backgrounds tell us, that it wasn't a matter of if there would be a united Ireland, but when. They very much wanted to be a part of that conversation, and shape what a new Ireland would look like," the Senator Added.
