A local senator is calling for urgent SNA resources at Cavan No. 1 National School as staff are under pressure to support students with complex needs.
Senator Pauline Tully told the Seanad that two junior infants with additional needs are attending only half days because no dedicated SNA is available.
She said the lack of SNAs is forcing other members of staff such as the principal to step in and provide that support, taking them away from their own role.
She outlined a number of students who need SNA support, and the school is under pressure to provide the required needs without the additional SNAs needed.
She warned that without additional support, the school may be forced to turn children away, and outlined a case where it's had to do that.
Speaking in the Seanad this morning, Senator Tully also pressed for the school to receive a special class from next September.
