Cavan Town Garda station saw the largest decrease in its garda numbers after 31 officers were reassigned in 2024.
The figures show that in Cavan town, the number of gardaí fell from 94 to 63 from the beginning of 2024 to the end of 2024.
Commenting on figures presented in the Irish Independent yesterday, Senator Pauline Tully said it was not good enough that Cavan Town had seen the largest reduction in Garda numbers in the state. The report reveals one in ten stations don't have a designated Garda on hand.
Official figures from the Department of Justice show 129 of the 567 stations across the country recorded a reduction in the number of Gardai assigned to them last year. Senator Tully says the government's failure to address policing numbers is leaving the people of Cavan exposed and putting the community at risk.
"The lack of gardaí has very serious consequences for our community in terms of deterring crime, investigating crime and ensuring that people feel safe."
"Successive Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael governments have failed to properly plan for and address this issue for more than a decade. This is a dereliction of duty, and communities right across the state are now paying the consequences."
"There is a serious problem in terms of garda visibility, particularly in terms of the lack of community gardaí. Until there is a significant increase in the training capacity of An Garda Síochána, this problem will not be fixed."
