A Co. Monaghan Senator has given his support for Jennie’s Law, after the Bill passed through the Seanad.
Senator Robbie Gallagher is the Seanad’s Spokesperson on Justice.
He described Jennie’s Law passing through the Seanad as an important step towards giving people access to information that could protect them from entering into abusive relationships.
Jennie’s Law will now proceed to the Dáil. When passed, it will establish a Domestic Violence Register, allowing judgements from serious domestic violence convictions to be published by the Courts Service.
Senator Gallagher believes that no one should unknowingly enter a relationship with someone who has a history of serious domestic violence convictions.
He said the Seanad was “happy enough” with the legislation that they were presented with.
Senator Gallagher explained: "No one should unknowingly enter a relationship with someone who has a history of serious domestic violence convictions. Jennie's Law is about giving people the information they need to make informed decisions.
"This legislation has the potential to save lives and I am delighted to see this Bill pass through the Seanad and move on to the Dáil. I hope it progresses quickly so that these important protections can be put in place as soon as possible.
"If a person is convicted of a serious criminal offence before the courts, that is a public conviction and the public are entitled to know about that conviction."
