A Monaghan councillor says he fully endorses supporting the Post Masters Union.
Cllr Alan Johnston's comments are in response to a letter issued to the local authority from the General Secretary of the Irish Postmasters' Union asking for the valued support for Irish Post Offices and the crucial role they play in communities across Ireland.
Monaghan County Council is calling on the Government to commit to investing €15 million annually in the Irish Post Office Network.
Cllr Johnston says in many communities, Post Offices are the only providers of essential government services, particularly for vulnerable individuals and families who may not have digital literacy or access to online platforms.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Johnston believes that Post Offices are the back bone to rural Ireland, adding that they "must be supported."
