Local TD Brendan Smith visits Belfast to address Good Friday Agreement 'potential'

'There is much still to be done to realise the potential of the Good Friday Agreement'

Fianna Fail TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Brendan Smith, visited Belfast this week in his capacity as Chairperson of the Party's Committee on Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement.

Deputy Smith said that as this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Agreement, the delegation he was part of was keen to hear from political parties and civic society groups.

The local TD highlighted how the present situation in Northern Ireland is one of "considerable concern". He pointed out that despite the challenges, there is an ongoing desire for engagement and discussion.

Deputy Smith added that "ongoing and regular engagement" will be essential in the coming weeks and months so that all the issues and concerns raised can be addressed. "While no-one denies that things are vastly much better than they were before the Good Friday Agreement, there is much still to be done to realise the potential of the Agreement.

"As Chair of the Fianna Fáil committee on Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement, I look forward, along with Party colleagues, to working constructively and positively to help the maximum potential of this historic Agreement," he said.
