Concerns have been raised over the policing of e-scooters after an elderly woman in Monaghan Town spent weeks in hospital as a result of being injured by one. Cllr Pauric Clerkin highlighted an incident where an elderly lady was leaving a shop property and was hit by someone on an e-scooter on the footpath.
While the person driving the e-scooter failed to stop, the woman spent a number of weeks in hospital and was "shaken" by the incident according to Cllr Clerkin. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Clerkin said people are frustrated with the lack of clarity around the policing of e-scooters.
Following on from concerns from locals, Cllr Clerkin has called on Monaghan MD to write to Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan and Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien to seek clarity on who is responsible for policing e-scooters.
Cllr Clerkin says it's important that we get to the bottom of this. He believes that Gardai should also have a certain level of authority when it comes to dealing with this issue:
