A former Monaghan councillor has warned that mistakes must not be repeated when it comes to the A5 road upgrade.
The High Court in Belfast yesterday quashed a Northern Executive decision to proceed with the major road project.
According to Mr Justice McAlinden, a core reason for this failure was a lack of consultation and scrutiny of new methods of estimating greenhouse gas emissions. He stated yesterday that the proposed scheme breaches elements of the North's 2022 Climate Change Act.
Paudge Connolly believes a new road which has the potential to save lives should surely out-weigh these concerns.
He said people are obviously "bitterly disappointed" that the Department of Infrastructure wasn't on top off this new legislation on climate action.
Mr Connolly believes that this current situation can be remedied, however homework must be properly completed when it comes to new legislation and putting forward a new application which is fit for purpose.
